snarky reasons why I really, really dislike the film ‘Into the Wild’:

* Even people who DO have experience in the wilderness would be idiots for embarking on such a sojourn without a topo map.

* If McCandless had taken some advice and brought one with him, he would have KNOWN that a hand-operated tram crossed the otherwise impassable river a quarter mile from where he attempted to cross. This doesn’t make him tragic, it makes him eligible for the Darwin Awards.

* Venturing into a wilderness area alone with no compass, supplies, emergency contact, etc… coupled with his lack of experience, was tantamount to suicide. If he didn’t go out there to expressly kill himself, you can bet that he regretted his impulse to be romantic in favor of, you know- continuing to breathe.

* There are plenty of better ways to make a fool of yourself, I mean guilessly explore the world in your youth, and actually come out having learned something worthwhile.
